The Board of Directors for YWCA Belize comprises 19 members who offer visionary and mission-driven leadership, alongside rigorous financial oversight. They actively advocate for the YWCA movement in Belize. Their strategic governance underpins and champions vital programs that assist numerous women and families across the country, facilitated through a widespread network of local YWCA associations.
Mrs. Lurleen Betson Gamboa – President, YWCA Belize
Mrs. Lurleen Betson Gamboa is a dedicated educator and Early Childhood Education specialist with over two decades of experience in Belize’s education sector. She began teaching at the age of 19 and has since served in various leadership roles, including Literacy Coach, Education Officer, and currently, Early Childhood Officer with the Ministry of Education.
Mrs. Gamboa holds a Master’s Degree in Education with a specialization in Literacy from Pre-K to Grade 12 from Bridgewater State University, and a Master’s in Early Childhood Education from the University of the West Indies. She is also a co-author of My B-Z Phonics Book 1 and holds certifications in counseling, professional training, and staff development.
A long-time supporter of the YWCA, Mrs. Gamboa began volunteering in 2009, assisting with the Ms. Y Pageant and the YWCA Seenagers Program. She served as Vice President before being elected President of the YWCA in 2024, currently serving a three-year term.
Known for her warm personality, collaborative spirit, and commitment to youth and women’s empowerment, Mrs. Gamboa continues to be a passionate advocate for education, community service, and lifelong learning.
